The likeable voices of Christopher John and Jesse Dryfhout almost belie the content of Happiness & Disaster, produced by the venerable Brad Wood (Smashing Pumpkins). Bold, smart, yet angsty, this is a songwriter's album, as skillfully conceived as it is delivered. Stabilo's acoustic sound is decidedly varied, containing elements of pop, folk and even a bit of early-'90s grunginess. This is invariably destined to be championed by the indie intelligentsia as well as those among the masses who know good from bad, and, moreover, can't get songs like Flawed Design out of their heads.
