Tapping into the generosity of Canadians and their love of music, a fundraising initiative to sell exclusive albums in support of tsunami-affected communities, was launched today.
The initiative will support "WavesToWater," a project created by CARE Canada and Engineers Without Borders Canada to assist in the re-building efforts in Indonesia by bringing clean and safe drinking water to communities in need.
Puretracks (puretracks.com) and partner sites (see below for partner URLs) are raising funds for the initiative through online sales of two album compilations featuring music by leading Canadian artists, including several new and exclusive tracks. The albums can be downloaded on Puretracks and partner sites for $10 each plus GST. All proceeds will go toward WavesToWater.
Loreena McKennitt comments: "If there is one constant in religious and moral thought across cultures and around the world, it is that we are all our brothers' keepers. When tragedies on the scale of the Asian tsunami leave us feeling as helpless as we are distant from those who have lost family and friends and have seen their communities destroyed, it is vitally important to remember that we can, individually and collectively, make a difference. Purchasing Puretracks' disaster relief compilation, "WavesToWater", is not merely a gesture of solidarity with everyone with whom we share this planet, it is a concrete and effective way to share our own good fortune and help to build a safer future for those affected."
Volume One features exclusive tracks from Loreena McKennitt, David Clayton-Thomas, Martha Wainwright and Jim Belushi as well as tracks from Sarah McLachlan, Tom Cochrane, Rush, Shaye and more.
Volume Two features exclusive tracks from Our Lady Peace, Simple Plan,
Finger 11, Andy Stochansky, Joel Plaskett and The Salads as well as tracks from Thornley, Sarah Slean, The Tea Party and others.
George Roter, Co-CEO, Engineers Without Borders, comments: "Puretracks, their partners and all the artists who have contributed to these albums have responded in an important way to this disaster. Their contributions, and those of all Canadians who purchase these albums, will enable our response, together with CARE, in the affected communities."
Jesse Moore, Director of Development, CARE Canada, says: "We were able to respond right away to this disaster, with essential emergency relief. But helping people rebuild their lives requires a long-term commitment. Helping people gain access to clean water and adequate sanitation is one critical part of that commitment, and we are thrilled that Puretracks and their partners have provided an opportunity for Canadians to support this work in partnership with Engineers Without Borders."
"Music is a truly universal language, so we hope Canadians agree that buying these albums is a great way to assist tsunami-affected communities,” says Alistair Mitchell, co-CEO, Puretracks.
Many individuals and organizations have provided generous support and assistance to make this fundraising initiative possible. The Puretracks team offers thanks to the participating artists, the Canadian Mechanical Rights Reproduction Agency (CMRRA), the Canadian Independent Record Producers Association (CIRPA) and the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) for their support, as well as the following record labels: 604 Records, Anthem Records, Casablanca Kids!, Coalition Entertainment, DKD-Tacca, EMI Music Canada, Justin Time Records, Kindling Music, Linus Entertainment, Maple Music Recordings, Nettwerk, Quinlan Road, True North Records, Universal Music Canada and Warner Music Canada.
"It's really great to see how quickly the record labels, publishers and artists responded to our request for help with this initiative," says Richard Dermer, Manager of Indie Relations for Puretracks.
