Canadian Music Cafe at the Rivoli
Who doesn't love a few beers and a few bands in the afternoon?
I only managed to get to one day of this year's Canadian Music Cafe, but it's had a major upgrade. The Rivoli lends a bit of grit to the event that last years lacked. The crowd's a mix of music supervisors, artist management, labels, publishing and PR types. Like last year, this year's minifest offers filmfestival goers, music supervisors and the like a look at a variety of up and coming Canadian talent. Unlike last year the PA didn't die without warning every third song or so.
On Wednesday Stabilo played as an acoustic duo to an appreciative room, but one where most hadn't yet found their way on to the dance floor. Not that there was dancing, but by midway through the 3 synth eighties revival known as The Russian Futurists people started to get pushed on to the floor. Keshia Chante was up next - try to remember the last time you saw a five person choregraphed dance number at the RIv. Mobile blew it up nicely to close the day. All in all; bigger production, bigger venue, and an eclectic mix of acts spread over 3 days - excellent sound overall and Kid Koala spinning to help you pass the time between sets.
From the looks of it the Cafe will only get bigger and better every year.
